Board meetings are an excellent way to create enthusiasm and bring members from diverse backgrounds to share their innovative ideas. However, keeping up the momentum is more than simply getting everyone in the same room.
Board members need to feel that they are able to trust each other enough to be honest and ask tough questions. This can only be achieved by having an openness and transparency culture. This is the reason it’s so important to establish a board environment that is committed to the importance of board meetings, and tries to make them as productive as they can.
The agenda of the board should clearly state what directors need to accomplish in order to meet their objectives. The agenda should be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected issues or the necessity to reorder items. Finally, the board should be given the opportunity to discuss any new business issues.
When it comes to discussing new business, a successful board chair will not present reports, instead focusing on facilitating discussion among the whole group. This will not only save time, but will also help create a positive and supportive environment which the board can be able to pose difficult questions to management.
A parking lot could be added to the agenda to allow small, random topics, and not distract from important issues. Being distracted by irrelevant discussions can take up the time for meetings and stop board members from taking actions.
